Deer Grandma: Nine Short Stories About Deer, Deer Hunting, Family, and Friendships is a work of non-fiction in the anthology, memoir, and reflection subgenres. Penned by author Elizabeth A. Wilkens, this unique work is a collection of stories that chronicles the author's evolution from a young wife and avid hunter to a seasoned naturalist and grandmother. Set on her family's farm, the stories reflect her experiences with deer hunting, the natural world, and the bonds of family and friends. Each tale captures the growth of her skills, the deepening connection to her land, and the joys and challenges of life in the outdoors. The book concludes with an emotive and thought-provoking poem that encapsulates her learned wisdom and respect for nature.

Author Elizabeth A. Wilkens offers readers a deeply moving collection, blending nostalgia, nature, and personal growth, and the stories vividly capture her journey from novice hunter to master naturalist, revealing the profound bond between humans and the land and the delicate balance we have to keep. Her respectful and humble approach to hunting, intertwined with family and friendships, created a rich tapestry of life and nature that was beautifully worded and suitably warm. I was particularly touched by how her narratives evoked a deep sense of gratitude for the natural world and the importance of family traditions. The book’s humor, empathy, and reflections on belonging to the land made it a heartfelt and inspiring read, resonating with anyone who appreciates the connection between people, nature, and the passage of time. Overall, Deer Grandma is a unique work that anyone seeking a vivid insight into a totally different way of living and experiencing nature will no doubt enjoy.

I appreciated the gentle - sometimes dry - humor, the devotion to family and the reverence for all things natural. This book is special, and I hope those who receive it hold it dear.

What an enjoyable collection of hunting stories by Ms. Wilkens. She paints such an amazing picture with her words, making you feel like you are experiencing the story right alongside the author. This is particularly true with the audio version. She narrates the stories in such a soothing, well-enunciated tone. I would highly recommend Deer Grandma to all readers from eight to one-hundred. I love the title too.

Well written, descriptive to be able to truly visualize and connect to the outdoors. All my experiences with the outdoors gives perspective, respect and appreciation of what the land gives us. This book is a great example of that.

Susan

This book is a heartwarming read. Elizabeth's writing is so engaging that she perfectly captures both her own and the reader's emotions. She is both passionate about and respectful of the animals she hunts. The book is a treasure trove of a life well lived in the natural world.
