Decolonizing the Body: Healing, Body-Centered Practices for Women of Color to Reclaim Confidence, Dignity, and Self-Worth by Kelsey C. Blackwell is a powerful self-help book for women who want to heal. Written by a woman of color, this book helps you accept yourself, heal, grow, and move on to a better place. it is divided into four informative parts in which she cleverly talks about the challenges an average black woman feels in society. Kelsey focuses on helping women find their confidence and build their self-esteem that may have been brought down because of generational trauma and societal pressure. This guide will help you understand yourself, rebuild your worth, and reclaim your soul.
Author Kelsey C. Blackwell keeps a very friendly but educating tone throughout this book. Decolonizing the Body perfectly reflects its title. I felt compassion in Kelsey’s words and how she formulated the narrative. She shares her personal experiences, which helped me form a connection with her and respect her. Being alienated is never a good feeling, and Kelsey explains that so well. I loved how she encouraged readers to embrace themselves, flaws and mistakes included. The narrative uplifts and motivates readers to embrace the beauty in their skin and heritage without giving in to what people say. The exercises mentioned in the book are easy to follow, and I found them very effective. I enjoyed the Reclaim part the most. The chapter on Challenging Impostor Syndrome was eye-opening, to say the least. It hit a nerve. I am a woman of color and after reading this book I felt seen, heard, and understood! Kudos to the author!
