Death Steals a Holy Book by Rosemary and Larry Mild is centered around the murder of Israel Finestein, a book restoration expert who was working on restoring a rare book owned by Dan and Rivka Sherman. As the story opens, we are introduced to Israel, a practicing Jew engaged to a woman named Peggy, who is living a Goth lifestyle and is much his junior. Their relationship makes for some interesting reading as this practicing Jew and his not-so-practicing Jewish fiancée find that their love is more powerful than their differences. However, when Israel is murdered, the book is stolen, and due to some incredibly bad timing and circumstances, Peggy becomes the main suspect.
Death Steals a Holy Book is filled with interesting characters and situations along the path to solving the murder. Lord Byron, the Shermans cat who himself gets kidnapped, Israel’s quirky Jewish family, and the prime suspect Peggy are just a few of these complicated and often entertaining people (and cat). Authors Rosemary and Larry Mild educate and entertain as they provide interesting details of Jewish life and culture that are relevant to the case. While the murder is the main course, there are also plenty of side excursions for the reader to enjoy. There are visits to the Shermans writing critique group, and a sub-plot involving one of their employees, a contested will, and a manipulative co-heir bent on cheating her out of her due.
The authors weave the details of this murder mystery together craftily and in a believable manner. The investigation provides plenty of potential murderers and thieves to keep the reader guessing. The courtroom scenes are well researched and interesting, and overall the book was a pleasure to read. If you like a good murder mystery in the cozy mystery genre, then I recommend you put this book on your reading list.
