I grew up in a weekly newspaper office. In addition to being a reporter and photographer, I was a journeyman hot type typographer. I attended a liberal arts college graduating with a major in philosophy (Honors Thesis: Aristotle’s Theory of Knowledge). This very practical degree enabled me, after escaping the draft, to become a motorcycle bum.
I woke up one morning on a kitchen floor in Boston, hung over and broke and decided to attend law school. Death Squad by Lee R. Atterbury is a gripping story with sophisticated and well-developed characters. Deputy Jim Taylor's life is in grave danger as a killer gets closer to home. Jim and his partner Hook have been known as the sheriff's death squad because they have made sure to send as many criminals as possible to their graves. It isn't difficult to trace the dead bodies they have left behind. Now, FBI agent Lucy Johnson believes that a serial killer is out to get him and wants Jim to partner with her. But having made so many enemies in his career, can Jim trust Lucy? And how much of the truth is she telling him?
This is a crime thriller with an intricate plot and the kind of cat and mouse game that gets readers turning the pages. The protagonist is a complex character, a hunter who is now being hunted and whose life is thrust into a battlefield with many potential enemies. Lee R. Atterbury uses suspense like a pro and plants a lot of suspicion in the minds of readers who find themselves guessing from page to page. There are many surprising twists and turns to build anticipation in readers, descriptions that allow for cinematic images in their minds, and characters that are deeply flawed and reflecting genuine human sentiment. Death Squad is fast-paced and utterly captivating, a story that is infused with powerful emotions and filled with riveting action. It is the kind of book that readers want to see on screen.
