Our Bodies Electric by Zackary Vernon is a coming-of-age story that follows a young teenager's journey of self-discovery during his adolescent years. Josh is a sixth-grader raised in a very conservative household with his two sisters on Pawley's Island, South Carolina, in the mid-1990s. Whether hanging out on the beach with his friends or attending church on Sundays with his family, Josh has a busy life. Meanwhile, he has taken an avid interest in wearing women's underwear, which his parents don't approve of. As he goes through puberty, Josh learns to acknowledge his own sexuality, following an informative and amusing sex-ed class in school alongside his friends. Meanwhile, the girl he has a crush on has started seeing another boy. But fate brings them together again when he runs into her at his first job.
Our Bodies Electric is a tale about adolescence, sexual awakening, and the exuberance and innocent naivety of youth. With a lively cast of characters, author Zackary Vernon spins a captivating yarn that follows the adventures and misadventures of a teenager navigating school, friends, family, first love, sexuality, and more. Vernon's characters are vividly drawn and act and talk like real people. Even with the large cast, the author ensures that each character feels distinct and impresses the reader regardless of page time. Josh grows up from a somewhat naive and curious teenager to a self-assured young man who knows what he wants and doesn't shy away from showing his true self in front of others.
