Dear Girl, I Hope You Know by Emma Meyer is an important book for young girls who need encouragement to find confidence in their own values and the courage to stand up for who they are. The book tells six stories to highlight the importance of kindness and caring, friendship, loyalty, and emotional support when it is needed. Each story is followed by a “Dear Girl” letter that highlights what the story was about. The book is illustrated with beautiful drawings that should help the reader to identify with the characters: friends, parents, and mentoring adults. The text is simple and evocative to resonate with 6-9-year-old readers and the characters are instantly recognizable by anyone living in the depicted neighborhoods.

I enjoyed this book, wishing I still had a daughter in the age group, so I could share it with her as I used to many years ago. I call it an important book because young girls of today in the social media world have so much to cope with; so many threats to their self-confidence discourage them from having pride in their accomplishments when subjected to incessant comparisons with often exaggerated boasts of their peers. I especially liked that kindness, empathy, helpfulness, and loving encouragement are constantly in a central place in the stories, reinforcing these most important human values that need to be instilled in youngsters as they grow up. I highly recommend Dear Girl, I Hope You Know by Emma Meyer to parents who wish to guide their children on the path to becoming happy and popular adults.
