Dear Children of the World: A Gentle Conversation Starter for Elementary-Aged Children Following Tragedy in our World by Cynthia Tatum Robinson is a children’s picture book designed to encourage and inspire children to share their thoughts and feelings after they go through a traumatic experience. The story is written in letter form with vivid illustrations and rhythmic writing. The book starts by showing us the beauty of the world we live in, and stressing how significant we are in helping keep our world beautiful. It goes on to explain that not everyone thinks the same and the actions they take may make us feel sad. It’s normal to worry and feel confused after hearing some bad news. The letter concludes by reassuring us that the world will get better because love always wins in the end.
Cynthia Tatum Robinson’s Dear Children of the World is a timely and relevant book because there are many unfortunate events happening in our world today. I found the colorful illustrations by Justin Savior of the characters and setting highly effective in providing a happy mood for the story. Parents and guardians are encouraged to read the parent resource guide at the end before reading this with their children since it contains tips and important information on how to use this book effectively. What makes this book commendable is that we can use it for almost any bad situation our family might be going through. Dear Children of the World encourages us in that children and adults should be reminded to focus on the beauty of our world especially when times are bad. Highly recommended!
