Deadly Doll by Brooke Cox is a tale of mystery. Brooksie’s mother had a favorite doll as a child, but Brooksie thought it had been destroyed in a fire. Then she discovers it hidden away in her grandmother’s attic. Her father takes it away from her, but dies a few days later, murdered. Six years later, the doll shows up again, following an accident. Brooksie and her best friend Darlene want to know why the doll keeps on being hidden and why do bad things happen when it turns up? Together they decide to look into the mystery and find out things about the past that they never knew. The girls skirt on the very edge of danger as they push on to discover the secrets of the doll, turning up family secrets that might just tell Brooksie who she really is.
Deadly Doll by Brooke Cox is an entertaining read, a story that anyone from teens upwards will enjoy. It is a fast-paced story, full of twists and turns, plenty of mystery, and a little humor to sweeten the deal. The characters were well developed, written in a strong way that allows the reader to connect to them and get to know them throughout the story. The main protagonists, Brooksie and Darlene, are witty, quick, and full of the enthusiasm and the inquisitiveness you would expect from girls of that age. The plot was very clever and kept me guessing all the way to the end; there were plenty of clues along the way, lots of suspense and an interesting ending, not one that you would imagine. The story also takes us on a journey through Brooksie’s life, with sometimes painful memories, but there is a touch of morality running through the entire book. I enjoyed this one and look forward to more from Brooke Cox in the future.
