Dead Sleep is a romantic paranormal fantasy novel written by T. Lynne Tolles. Declan Porter had it all, except for the one true love he seemed unable to find. He did have a best friend, Casey, who secretly wished they were more than that, but would never ever admit it to him. Casey was not so sure about his latest plan to mountain bike the Appalachian Mountain Trail on his own. She figured something awful would happen to him out there and tried to persuade him to at least have some companions along, but Declan was adamant about his adventure plans. The first day on the trail went just fine, aside from a face-plant along the way, but, on the second day, he hit a snag. He was making good time and pumping hard when he hit loose gravel. His elbow and forearm took the brunt of the sliding fall, but his bike ended up with a flat tire and a bent wheel. Then, as he was attempting to repair his bike, the ground beneath him gave way, and he fell into a cave. When he came to, a lovely woman in an old-fashioned dress was standing over him and smiling. Her name was Kat, and she seemed other-worldly and strangely unfamiliar with the modern day world.
T. Lynne Tolles' romantic paranormal fantasy, Dead Sleep, is an enjoyable and thought-provoking tale about love, loyalty and self-sacrifice. It begins with a look at the world the mysterious Kat originally came from: her stately manor home in the suburbs of Philadelphia in the mid-nineteenth century and her marriage to a young doctor. I enjoyed seeing the juxtaposition of past and present, and found the author's method for conveying her historical characters into the future to be clever and original. For me, the real star of the story is the resourceful and curious Casey, rather than her best friend and love object, Declan. She’s strong, independent and fearless. This is a well-written and fast-paced story that makes the reader unable to resist reading further to get to the mystery behind Kat's appearance in the cave. It's recommended reading.
