Dead Already by Mike Krentz is a top-notch medical thriller that will have you hooked until the end. Emergency room doctor Zack Winston has a haunted past, and it plays well against the second main character, Bridget Larsen, a defense attorney whose cynical attitude has been shaped by her cases. Together they take on a malpractice suit but find drugs and murder wrapped in a medical conspiracy. They chip away at the case one piece at a time, exposing shocking truths and rocking the world of those around them, putting their own lives in danger in the process.
The author has created a nail-biter of a medical drama, reminiscent of Robin Cook's bestsellers. There is an edginess to the characters and writing, the pace is unnerving, and the plot has enough mystery, suspense, and intricacies to keep you invested all the way through. I like the full-bodied, imperfect characters Krentz has built. Zack has a past that works well for the story and the chemistry and drama he has with Bridget is compelling. You are plunged from page one into the hectic ER environment, and it doesn't let up from there. The dialogue is dynamic and revealing, the payoff more than satisfying. The author's medical background lends realism and details that make this an absorbing, convincing story, but the skillful writing makes this a cut above similar works. This isn't a gloss-over, lightweight novel. Dead Already by Mike Krentz delivers all the medical and legal goods you expect from the genre.
