Dreams can take you to all kinds of wonderful places and give you lots of magical fun. Davina loves to go to her dreamdom; that’s what she calls the place where her dreams take her. One night, after falling asleep and waking up in dreamdom, Davina called her doggy friends, Agnes and Merida, to join her on another adventure. They decide to visit Belgium and, in particular, Agnes’s cousins, who are large herding dogs, Bouvier des Flandres, and they spend their days herding sheep. It’s a grand adventure and Davina even learns a few words in Dutch, as well as what working dogs really do on the farm.
Paige Herndon’s picture book story, Davina’s Dreamdom: An Adventure to Belgium, is a fun way to teach young readers about a different country, a different lifestyle, a different language, even a different time zone where it’s morning when Davina is just going to sleep, and of course, some wonderful working dogs. The language is simple to help young readers learning to read. And the colorful illustrations help move the story along. The plot develops through Davina’s adventure in dreamdom, reaching a clever climax when she suddenly realizes the dream must end and she must return home. Why? Because, as she explains to her new friends in Belgium, “My mommy and daddy won’t know how to play if I’m not there.” I love that line – from a child’s point of view, all parents are merely playing. A sweet, compassionate story that will appeal to the young reader.
