K.J. Kearns’ Dark Rituals involves Case Channing and Brynlee "Bryn" Jones. Bryn moved to Las Vegas after someone threatened her life because she had seen something she shouldn’t have. Case was a pre-law student tasked with finding Bryn as part of his initiation into a fraternity. Adopting the persona of Frederick and using a British accent, Case learned that Bryn had left UCLA for Vegas. He used a private jet to fly there and discovered that Bryn worked as a burlesque dancer. Determined to convince Bryn to board the private plane and fly to California for a fraternity party, Case paid Bryn $500 for a private show. However, the dominatrix dance triggered painful memories, and he rushed from the building. With a time limit on returning to UCLA, how would Case gain Bryn’s trust?
K.J. Kearns built intense suspense throughout the entire story. Finding Bryn, getting her to return to UCLA, and presenting proof to the fraternity would be difficult for anyone. The question of what Bryn saw weighed on my mind. Many of the feelings that Case experienced while talking to Bryn were relatable to most first dates. The alternating perspectives between Bryn and Case allowed me to connect with their feelings. The more information Case revealed, the more it intrigued me and I could not put the book down. There were vivid details of the events that Bryn and Case attended, which made it easy to envision each moment. The gravity of the situation threw unpredictable twists into the plot. Dark Rituals will enchant romance readers who enjoy character-driven stories.
