Danny and Mickey, Ordinary Heroes by Robert N. McLaughlin is a memoir that explores the friendship between two sports professionals — Manager of the 1960 and 1971 World Series Champions, Danny Murtaugh, and seven-time American League All Star first baseman and AL batting champion in 1946 and 1953, Mickey Vernon. The narrative takes readers back to 1927 and shows how the two friends connected with their common passion for baseball and follows their careers in baseball through playing together to becoming champions. Along the way they experienced difficult times, lived through challenging historical periods, but their dream never wavered. In this story, readers discover the secrets of their success, the strength of their friendship, and the power of teamwork.

Robert N. McLaughlin’s book is well researched and I enjoyed the historical references, the vivid capturing of the different settings and the social commentaries that enrich the story. While the story has a strong appeal to fans of baseball, it is a heartwarming American tale that follows the friendship of two boys from the small town of Chester, PA. The writing is atmospheric and filled with wonderful details. The author talks about insignificant things in a way that readers will find interesting. This book can be read as an inspirational story, one that teaches readers what it takes to live a dream and the importance of having a supportive friend, someone to remind us of where we are going. Danny and Mickey, Ordinary Heroes has a beautiful plot structure, and it is crafted skillfully to grab the reader’s attention and to keep it. The story has strong social and political themes, filled with fun and laughter, and permeated with lessons that fit any walk of life.
