Dangerous Courage by Alexandra J. Dover is a very emotional and heartbreaking autobiography that focuses on the author’s struggle with severe depression that has plagued her since the age of five. Throughout the book, we learn why her depression started so early in life. Mrs. Dover endured so much pain and suffering since she was a small child. She was neglected by her drunken parents and was always starving, cold, and dirty. Her extended family also joined in the abuse by physically hitting her, usually with a fishing pole, and sexually taking advantage of her. After many years of living this horrible life, she was finally rescued from her broken home, and she was sent to live with different foster parents. However, the majority of these homes didn’t offer her the love and care that she had always hoped for. All the author ever wanted was to have a family that loved and protected her. In the end, the author triumphs over all of her hardships and starts a family of her own. However, the debilitating severe depression lingers into her adult life and it is still something that the author struggles with on a daily basis.
I absolutely loved reading Dangerous Courage by Alexandra J. Dover, because it was such a powerful and moving story. The author had so many bad experiences throughout her life that I was on the verge of tears after reading the horrible things she had to endure at the hands of the people that were supposed to love and protect her. I was moved by all of the hardships that she endured at such a young age. The author didn’t have a voice when she was young, because she was always nervous and fearful, but this autobiography allowed her to project her voice loud and clear. Child abuse is something that is common in this world, and it is very sad that it exists, because children are so innocent, fragile, and defenseless. No child should ever have to experience any pain, sadness, loneliness or feel afraid, unloved, and unprotected. I congratulate the author on having the strength and courage to write this amazing autobiography!
