Daisy is Shy, and That’s Okay by Lindsay DeRollo is a picture book dedicated to those who are quiet and shy. It tells the story of Daisy, a polar bear who is very quiet and shy. She has a best friend, Penelope, who is extroverted and has no problem making friends. Daisy wishes she could be as outgoing as her friend, but whenever she tries to talk to others, the words get stuck in her mouth. Fortunately, she has an understanding support group—her mother, her friend, and her teachers—who tell her there’s nothing wrong with her and give her useful tips for making friends. Her teacher also stands up for Daisy when one of her classmates tries to ridicule her for this shyness, discouraging bullying. Her teacher also enlightens the class on famous introverts who were notably smart, such as Albert Einstein, Sir Isaac Newton, and Steven Spielberg.

It is common for people to think there is something wrong with them because they are shy and struggle to make friends. However, Lindsay DeRollo expresses a contrary view in Daisy is Shy, and That’s Okay. Everyone Daisy asks for help tells her there is nothing wrong with her and she just needs some self-confidence. Her mother helps her create an action plan to feel more comfortable around the other bears. This plan, as well as other tips included in the book, are simple and practical guides for children who may be struggling to make friends. Through Daisy's story, children will learn the importance of self-love, acceptance, and perseverance in overcoming social anxiety. Making friends takes time and consistency, and no one should beat themself up for struggling with this. This book is a warm reminder for the quiet child that they are not alone. The author even includes a heartwarming letter with more tips and example scenarios to help children build their self-confidence at the end of the book. I recommend this book to parents, guardians, and teachers who want to help children come out of their shells.
