Cyber Defenders: The Adventures of the Safety Squad by Joshua T. Pennifield is a children's educational adventure story. The Safety Squad is hanging out in their hideout, planning their next cybersecurity adventure. Max and his friends are aware of several cyber threats in the school and surrounding community and have made it their job to educate people on all the different ways their privacy and information can be breached and stolen. Their adventures take them from password security to online strangers and everything in between, but will their hard work and diligence pay off? What lies in store for the Squad at the end of the school year?
Cyber Defenders by Joshua T. Pennifield is an excellent book on the dangers of the internet. It may be aimed at middle schoolers but there are plenty of adults out there who could learn a few things from this book. It is written in a fun way that makes following along easy, but it covers serious subjects like password security, the dangers of malware, fake news, online trolls, and more, and it even covers the Dark Web and smart home security. Each chapter covers a different subject, a new adventure for the Squad, and ends with an overview of the lessons learned and a series of questions to test what the reader learned. The answers are all found at the end of the book, along with a useful glossary of terms. The characters are entertaining, and you’ll get to know and understand them very well, but they don’t distract you from each chapter’s theme and lessons. There should be more books like this on the market, especially given the amount of time we all spend on our devices and the internet these days. A fantastic book, and highly recommended for kids and adults.
