Cross Faded is a work of fantastical urban fantasy and quirky modern-day drama penned by author Merethe Walther. This bizarre but fitting work starts as it means to go on when Ezra Ashford finds an armored woman hunting a giant invisible beetle in his apartment. Trying at first to push away the strange things he sees as hallucinations, Ezra soon worries that he’s going mad, just the way his mother did. But when reality sets in, it becomes clear that these creatures and demons are real indeed, and Ezra’s presence is unwelcome to most. As he gets wrapped up in an adventure he never asked for, he tries to make sense of why it might be happening to him, and where reality truly is at the center of it all.
Metaphor and fantasy play as fantastic bedfellows in this unusual but brilliant work of fiction, allowing the reader to go on a journey that is as unpredictable and open to interpretation as what Ezra himself feels. Author Merethe Walther keeps the unpredictability going to produce a tight and fast-paced plot that is difficult to predict but always turns out to make sense in a really satisfying manner. The character themselves are drawn with wry humor and a great deal of pathos, with Ezra and his tortured mind making him an immediately likable yet unconventional hero for the tale. Overall, Cross Faded comes highly recommended for fans of slick modern fiction with weird fantasy twists, and an ending that will surprise you but not let you down.
