Creatures of Fire: Demons Die Harder by J.B. Brooklin is the story of Sariel Baldwin, a half demon, as yet unaware of this fact until the arrival of a demon named Alexander into her life. Alexander has been contracted to kill her uncle, but in a moment of distraction brought on by his attraction to Sariel, her uncle is able to catch Alexander off guard and imprison him with his own web of magic. The action intensifies as Alexander learns that Sariel's uncle has dark and fatal plans for her, and he gives up his freedom to save her. Horrified, Sariel is determined to enter the underworld of demons to learn the secret that will release Alexander from the bondage he entered to save her life. It's here that she must decide if she's willing to risk her life in a death match to get that information.
Creatures of Fire is an entertaining tale of Sariel learning to come into her own as a half demon under dangerous and pressing circumstances. J.B. Brooklin uses a solid imagination to create the magic that is used throughout the book, but her talents really shine when Sariel reaches the underworld of the demons. The characters there, and the ever changing world she paints, are a nice departure from the normal world “up top”. Sariel faces many challenges in this story, but she is helped along by some colorful characters, all of which are brought to life quite nicely. For the short time some are in the story, I got a nice sense of who they were. I expect this story to hold great appeal to avid readers of this genre.
