Frankie loved playing with his yellow duck, Pete. He had found Pete on the street, and he was dirty and had no smile on his face. Frankie cleaned him and they played for a while. Pete was happy and the smile came back to his face. They played together all the time until Pete got lost. Frankie tried his best to find Pete and searched for him everywhere. He wondered where Pete could have gone. No one had seen his duckie and Frankie looked by the water where the ducks played and the treehouse but Pete was nowhere to be seen. Frankie was gloomy. That night he saw a shooting star and decided to wish for Pete to come back so that he wouldn't be cranky. Would it work and would he be able to find Pete?
Cranky Frankie and The Lost Duck by Apara Mahal Sylvester is a whimsical story of friendship, perseverance, determination, and magic. The illustrations are as enchanting as the story and the rhyming verses not only give it a rhythmic feel but also a good pace and movement. It is wonderful to see Frankie's love for his duck and the extent to which he goes to find Pete. Tutors can use it for storytelling sessions and read-aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries along with encouraging their students to use rhyming words while attempting to write verses. Parents and grandparents can use it for bedtime storytelling. The water, treehouse, duckie, and the shooting star bring out the magic beautifully. The concept of never giving up is tangible in the way Frankie goes looking for Pete. The book teaches children to never give up.
