Timothy is staying with his grandparents for the summer and attending a summer day camp. The first morning he heads out but is greeted by two boys, Josh and Zack, who demand his lunch money. When Timothy resists, they push him to the ground. The bullying has begun. Timothy’s grandparents know something’s wrong when he returns after camp. They get Timothy to share his story. The grandparents take action, but, sadly, the bullying escalates. Timothy is encouraged to speak to the camp counsellor and gradually things are rectified. Both the bullies and the bullied learn valuable lessons.
Christopher Gordon’s picture book story, Courage in the Face of Bullying: Timothy’s Lessons in Good Values, is a poignant look at a problem that has existed since the beginning of time: bullying. Timothy’s confrontation with the bullies becomes a frightening journey of self discovery. He’s confused and scared and really doesn’t know how to deal with the situation. Talking to his grandparents is the first step in the right direction and he learns that it’s important to speak up, to have the courage to face his oppressors. The story is told in simple language so the young reader can learn to read along or read by themselves. The colorful illustrations help carry the story forward. At the end of the book are some exercises for the young reader to help them understand bullying, why it’s wrong and why it’s important to have the courage to stand up against bullies. “Don’t be ashamed or embarrassed. Always stand together against bullying.” A powerful message for both young and old because bullying doesn’t just affect young people. There are bullies everywhere, bullies and victims of all ages.
