In Coulee Abolitionists by Steven Kent Olson, a historical story set in 1854, 14-year-old Anton Narvik was living a normal life until one day his life was changed because of a simple truth. Fugitives were hiding in a coulee valley on their farm, and there was something about them that spoke to him. With such a big secret to hide, Anton cannot help but wonder if these people were really wanted by the law? What did they do to get themselves into this situation? Is it true that they were unjustly treated?
Coulee Abolitionists by Steven Kent Olson is a historical fiction tale that literally takes you back in time and makes you live the era along with the characters. This novel had me interested from the moment I read the synopsis and I was hooked by the time the first chapter ended. The imagery is so descriptive and the details of the period so accurate that I felt almost transported back in time and living with the characters. I cannot find a single fault with this story, the timeline or even the narrative. Everything reads smoothly and it shows that the author paid great attention to detail. The element of suspense and then action puts the story in overdrive and makes things even more exciting for the reader. The characters are all unique and can easily be distinguished as individuals. Anton’s development is not very sudden; it is gradual and takes time. He is given time to grow, understand, adapt and then become the protagonist this story needed, which is something that I absolutely enjoyed! A wonderful tale.
