"CottonTop and the Mysterious Shadows" by R. J. Ryan is a great children's story that introduces us to Cory and Katy. These two kids are happy campers when their parents let them go into the woods by themselves for the first time. When they walk into the woods they meet a family of rabbits, a mother rabbit and three little bunnies. An enjoyable day is spent in the woods but when it is almost dark there is suddenly a large and looming shadow that appears behind some bushes. This shadow is scary and sends chills down everyone's spine.
It has been a while since I have honestly sat down and read a children's book. However, I have a little cousin who is starting to read on his own and I wanted to find a book that I feel he could enjoy and R.J Ryan has hit the jackpot story-wise. For a kid this is a very engaging story with loveable and warm characters that will keep a young reader entertained. You have the core of childhood fun with an adventure in the woods and meeting new friends; the best part is that they are cute and cuddly animal friends. The adventure turns into a thriller with the arrival of the dark shadow. Kids love a good adventure and so do I, and so I really did like this book. It was a fast read for me of course and I think that kids will find it an easy one too. The themes are good and solidly perfect for small readers.
