In Cotton Tale by E. C. Fisher, Captain Callus Newton finds himself stranded on an eerily silent island along with his stewardess Rebecca and the Vanderbach family, following the crash-landing of their private jet. With insufficient supplies and little to no chance of being rescued, the group starts to look for the source of the reflective surface the captain had spotted earlier, hoping to find shelter or other people. They come across an abandoned building that was once used for research. A journal retrieved from the place reveals an unpleasant fact: a mad scientist merged the DNA of multiple animals, trying to produce a ferocious creature. The survivors soon realize that the monstrous being created in the process is after them, and it is not alone. Will they be able to get away unharmed?

E. C. Fisher’s Cotton Tale is a short and fast-paced horror story. All the characters are imperfect in their own way, which makes them sound natural and relatable. Fisher has done a good job with the descriptions as well; there are several scenes involving pain and mild gore that make readers feel a bit of what the characters go through. The book has a simple and easy-to-follow plot; it is nevertheless thought-provoking. The horrifying situation on the island arises from a mistake made decades ago: a mistake that involved going against nature for the sake of gaining more power. The way the story ends makes readers think about the insatiable greed of humanity and the devastation that it may cause. Cotton Tale is recommended for any fan of horror looking for a quick read.
