“Do not fear. The convergence is coming.” In Convergence (The Earthside Trilogy) by Sherri Fulmer Moorer, biological engineer Willow Lanier is banished from Earth to penal colony Kuiper Station One for launching a cybertec virus that caused many deaths as a political statement against the cybernetic aliens. Feeling remorseful and wanting to atone for her crime, she and the rest of the outcast scientists are tasked with studying a spatial anomaly that has been expanding for 30 years. They soon discover that there’s a significant change coming their way that will affect their reality and beyond.
Moorer’s Convergence has a strong premise and the narrative kept me engaged from start to finish. The world-building and its proposed futuristic tech are relatable and not too overly complex for one to imagine, combined with a well thought out plot. The spatial anomaly, the characters’ episodes of ‘dissociative amnesia’, as well as their personal opinions about the aliens keep the level of mystery and suspense high as they try to figure out who to trust. Willow is a well fleshed out protagonist, with strengths and flaws that give her a substantial personality with admirable depth. I also gravitated towards Addie and her brash attitude. There are several good twists that readers will love and Moorer ends the story with an epilogue that promises another exciting sequel. All in all, this is an entertaining and commendable read with a vital message about the importance of understanding and unity for the benefit of all.
