Confederate Gold is a work of humorous fiction penned by author Penn Miller, which promises ‘A Modern-day Romp through the Civil War History of Richmond, Virginia’. In the Confederate Capital of the American Civil War, we find ourselves immersed in the world of battle re-enactment with an odd but passionate group of would-be soldiers. When they discover a stash of Confederate gold that was thought to be long gone, however, the conflict turns real as other parties have their own designs on the money. What results is a hilarious chase-style novel filled with bizarre characters, real military history and a showcase of beautiful locations in and around Richmond.
Author Penn Miller does a marvelous job of marrying together the travel, historical and comedic aspects of this oddly satisfying novel, creating a charming race against time that will both educate and amuse its audience. A particular highlight for me was the intense attention to detail which is paid to the re-enactors themselves, colorfully described and brought to life as individuals with a lot to say. Their snappy dialogue and personal interactions make for really funny reading, and you find yourself truly rooting for them as the plot twists and turns around them. There’s also a strong sense of reality in the depiction of Richmond itself, though never so much that it overwhelms the scene at the time. Overall, Confederate Gold is an eclectic mix of history, modernity, and mayhem that is sure to capture the hearts of history enthusiasts of all ages.
