Concession Stand Crimes: The Ballpark Mysteries Book 2 by Nicole Asselin introduces Madeline as she undertakes the task of managing the Abington Armadillos. Her staff includes the head of security, Davis, the secretary, Eliza, and youthful assistant, Max. When Max discovers the corpse of Alaska Redmond under the counter of a concession stand, the police are called in to investigate. Madeline and Davis also reconnoiter to minimize the impact on the baseball venue. The wealthy Redmond family has its share of dramas and Alaska is well known for her temper. Madeline has to cope with being hounded by the press, intimidated by anonymous threats, and having her laptop stolen. The future looks grim for the family-owned baseball venue until an unexpected person is unmasked as the culprit.
Concession Stand Crimes by Nicole Asselin provided an original twist on a cozy mystery. The narrative delivered suspense and chills from within the comfortable context of a favorite sport. The characterization was excellent. Madeline was an incredibly likable character with whom I found it easy to empathize. Davis was capable and assuring as head-of-security and a dependable romantic lead. The Redmond family wielded enough power and influence to be truly threatening. Madeline’s workplace concerns provided a progressive element as she strived to prove she could succeed in an executive position and fulfill her responsibility to the park staff and patrons. I liked the fact that I was not able to pick out the villain before the appropriate point in the story. I can genuinely recommend this book to readers of mystery stories and new adult literature.
