The amount of research that author Robert L. McHenry put into this book is amazing. For people like myself who are looking at retirement in complete bewilderment, Common Sense Approach: Guide to Negotiating the Retirement Maze and Choosing a Retirement Community is the ultimate book! The author answered questions that I hadn’t thought to ask. The advice is thorough, and where Dr. McHenry felt less than qualified, he refers the reader to other sources.
The book discusses every aspect of finances, past, present, and future. It maps out all the senior living options from staying home, to moving to senior housing, to moving into stepped-care management facilities. How will someone manage healthcare issues in the future, for both the reader and his/her partner? Personal factors are in the mix as well. How close does a person want to be to children, grandchildren, or long-time neighbors? Is location a factor, or is the living situation the most important criterion? Does the reader want to fully retire or keep working? Are current hobbies important? Is trying new things what someone sees in retirement years? How does a person strike a balance between all these factors and come to the optimal decision?
Reading Common Sense Approach took me a while because it was so dense with important information that I had to stop frequently to digest. This book is incredibly well-organized and thorough. Dr. McHenry wrote it to be a reference book, so there is a detailed table of contents to help the reader find the exact information he/she is looking for. As a target audience, I am grateful for a truly helpful book.
