Colors of Immortality is a dark, contemporary, young adult fantasy novel written by J.M. Muller. Daniel Thatcher had been looking forward to his double date after he finished working at Mick's Grocery that Sunday, but he could instantly see something was wrong with his truck. As he drew closer, he saw the flat tire. He wasn't sure if someone had let the air out as a prank, or it was really a flat, but he was sure that his plans had just fallen through. His cell phone wasn't in his pocket, nor was it in his truck. He had left it charging at home, so he had no way to let Tony know he’d be late. To make matters worse, as he began the process of jacking up his truck to change the tire, his ex-girlfriend, Sarah, came up to try to talk about their disastrous Friday night incident. What Daniel and everyone saw was a drunken Sarah who came onto another classmate, making Daniel a laughing stock and object of derision. But Sarah swore she had been drugged by Tony's new girlfriend, Candace, who had given her a drink. She was sure that Candace was trying to break them up, but Daniel still couldn't understand why his girlfriend of over a year could still do what she did. He didn't really want to deal with her at the moment either; he just wanted to go on that date with Claire. When he finally got to Tony's house, however, Tony had already gone. He left a note saying that he had waited but then decided to let Eric go on the date instead. Daniel swore and went home; his entire weekend had been a disaster. In retrospect, he’d find out that he was actually the lucky one. Tony and Eric's double date had been a terrifying experience at best.

J.M. Muller's Colors of Immortality is a thrilling and suspenseful story about a young man's discovery of a race of Immortals living not that far from the house he shares with his grandmother. He goes out there at first to find his best friend, Tony, whose disappearance is puzzling and entirely out of character, and he finds that the ravings of his cousin, Eric, were actually based in reality. Narivous is a strange world, filled with monsters waiting to kill any intruders and one enchanting and lovely being, Fantasia, who risks the wrath of Thorn, the leader of the Immortals, and saves Daniel's life. Muller's plot is ingenious and fascinating, and her immortal world is sadly filled with paradoxes, as the Immortals live under strict control and in fear of their sadistic and dictatorial leader. Colors of Immortality is not your typical fantasy tale -- it's much more than that, and even the most jaded fantasy readers should give this fast-paced, exciting and often terrifying story a try. It's highly recommended.

Muller opens with his day going from bad to worse. After car trouble leaves him stranded, he ends up missing a double date that he'd hoped would take his mind off his cheating ex-girlfriend. Instead, he finds out that after the double date both his best friend and cousin go missing, but no one seems concerned that they are gone. Then he find a map his best friend left behind and goes in search of the truth. He gets more than he bargained for in the remote area of the Cascade Mountains, and stumbles upon a group of people who, while stunningly beautiful, harbor sinister secrets. And Daniel just happens to be the person they were looking for.

Colors of Immortality by J.M. Muller is a unique sort of paranormal novel. I enjoy the genre, but rarely read a book that is solely from a male character's point of view, and that alone should definitely interest anyone looking for something a little different. Muller crafts a fascinating legend and original mythology with the Velores that is both disturbing and intriguing. At first I wasn't sure if Colors of Immortality was a stand alone or a series, but after reaching the end and reading "Legend," a bonus short story, I can see that Muller is about to treat her fans to more adventures with Daniel and Fantasia. Great for anyone looking for a new twist on a popular genre.
