It might not be an ideal day to climb a mountain, but it had to be done. All agree that identical twins, peas in a pod, Abilene and Caitlyn are the best candidates to complete the important mission of rescuing one of the Colony’s security drones. Although Abilene is normally the twin who receives words of acclaim, today is Caitlyn’s turn when she finds herself saving her sister from a potentially horrible fall on the mountain. As Abilene declares Caitlyn her hero, their doomed destiny could not be anticipated by the fellow inhabitants of Colony XO. As stated in the final pages of this futuristic tale by Jesse Carr, MD, “The Colony XO teens were on their own, on a distant planet left to their own devices. The next challenge in their ascension was reproduction, survival and sustainability.”
Colony XO by Jesse Carr, MD is a realistic sci-fi image of the not so distant future in which a group of young people rises to the challenge of ruling, governing, and maintaining a viable existence. Alone on a distant planet and reliant upon advanced items of technology, the community is thrown into the “dark ages” when access to modern technology is threatened. The storyline and narrative are accurate and believable. Geared toward young adult readers, Colony XO is a good fit for the techie buff or science fiction fan. Jesse Carr is timely in this twenty-first-century plot, yet capable of retaining particular nuances of the average, timeless teenager. The brevity of the novel and the compact character list make this a good book for YA readers intimidated by lengthy volumes.
