College Mania (Is a University the New Doctor?) by Joshua Flapan is a non-fiction educational book that would appeal most to a mixed audience of students considering college, parents with kids considering college, and those in college. This book focuses on the different elements involved in college for different degrees, the ways in which colleges are failing to uphold their mission statements, and the debt that many college students face by the end of their degree. The author further discusses how young adults can get productive jobs without obtaining a college education and the debt that comes with it. This book strives to help students to understand what college really is, what it actually provides, and if college is worth it for the individual.
College Mania (Is a University the New Doctor?) by Joshua Flapan is a well-written book with some eye-opening points about the college educational system. As a graduate psychology student, I found myself agreeing with many points the author made in this book especially in regards to student debt. The points were all well constructed, well researched, and organized in an easy to understand manner. I personally found the information about the alternatives to a college degree and the jobs a person could obtain without such a degree to be very intriguing. I really enjoyed the author’s writing style with how he laid out the information in a straightforward way that included examples that I could connect with on a personal level, while avoiding any technical or legal jargon that would have confused me. Overall, while some might consider this book to be controversial, I found it to be an interesting and worthwhile read that I only wish I had read before I began my college education - it may have helped me to find a different direction for myself that did not include a college degree!
