While there are a variety of books to help you get into college, there are very few that help you navigate the college scene once you receive admittance, transfer to a different university, or start attending classes on campus. Even parents have questions to ask about the university experience because things may have changed since their days at college, or maybe they never set foot on a campus and don’t know the first thing to ask.
This book came about for this very reason. Bewildered by the number of colleges out there and their differences, we looked for one source to answer a multitude of questions in one place. We found SAT test practice books, college rankings and ratings, and how-to books on writing college essays, but nothing that helped with how to ask and have questions answered when you don’t know what you don’t know.
Coming up with questions was not hard. We knew nothing and moved on from there to involve university representatives, trade association spokesmen, company and government agency personnel, and students themselves in answering our questions. What resulted was a guidebook for parents of prospective college students, incoming freshmen, college transfer students, and those now studying at universities. The book deals with all aspects of college, and it does answer these important questions.

College, Covid, and Questions: Tips and Advice for Incoming Freshmen, Undergraduates, Transfer Students, and Parents is a practical guide for preparing for college and for life on (or living off) campus. The author, Suzy Beamer Bohnert, covers every conceivable topic relating to the college experience. Her book is addressed to both students and their parents and covers everything from technology to tutoring to tips for getting along with a roommate. Other topics include getting an internship, getting help with physical/emotional accommodations, buying textbooks, and many more. There is also critically important information about staying safe from the coronavirus. The book is written in a Q & A format, which makes it easy for readers to target a particular topic they may be interested in. The author provides additional resources in the form of links to useful websites and a comprehensive index.
I wish this book had been available when I started college. There’s an almost endless amount of useful, practical information. Because I’m a university professor, College, Covid, and Questions caught my eye. I thought I might garner some useful tips to pass on to my students, and I wasn’t disappointed. The book asks, and answers, questions that students or their parents may not even have thought of. Because it addresses the current Covid-19 crisis, Suzy Beamer Bohnert’s book is state-of-the-art relevant. The description of the safety measures that colleges are taking is spot on, or at least mirrors the precautions at my university. I highly recommend Suzy Beamer Bohnert’s excellent book. Every new and current college student, and their parents, would benefit from it.
