Coldwater Confession by James A. Ross is the second installment in the Coldwater mystery series. When thousands of shoulder-fired missiles ended up with the Mujahideen fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan in the 1980s, thousands of missiles vanished from the U.S. military bases. However, nobody is supposed to ask questions, and no military investigation was ever conducted. When Tom Morgan returns to Coldwater, he is attracted to a troubled young woman and gets entangled with family matters while taking charge of the charred shell of his Frank Lloyd Wright house. He will also be involved in an investigation that may solve the mystery of the past. With his brother Joe running the sheriff’s department of Coldwater, he becomes involved in the investigation that will lead them back to the unexplained missile theft and the unsolved murder of their father.
James A. Ross’ Coldwater Confession has all the elements of an excellent mystery novel. The characters are strong, engaging, and well-developed. The interaction between the Morgan brothers is exciting; through them, readers can experience the environment the author created. It is a highly charged environment as we go through the many twists and turns of the story with them. Although this is the second installment in a series, it is easy to follow even if one has not read the first book. The conflicts that create the narrative thread are mesmerizing as these involve disagreements with the self, others, and the environment. The pacing is exceptional since there is always something interesting on every page. Another literary device used effectively here is foreshadowing so that as you read on, there is always an atmosphere of suspense. Highly recommended!
