Cocoa Hugs and Coffee Mugs by Tammy Gerhard is a delightful children's picture book. It's about treating people around us with kindness and spending quality time with them. It follows a mother and her daughter as they enjoy their daily ritual of going to the coffee shop. There are a lot of yummy snacks, drinks, and great people to meet with. Adults love coffee, but this little girl loves hot cocoa. She has a dilemma. The motto of the coffee shop is "Love coffee, love people," so how can she, a hot cocoa lover, love people like coffee lovers? Thus, her mother teaches her daughter that there are numerous ways to show love and care. Everyone deserves to be treated with kindness, regardless of age, color, size, or shape.
Cocoa Hugs and Coffee Mugs is a fun and engaging read that makes your mouth water while showing you some sweet and simple gestures of kindness to spread happiness to the people in your community. It contains lovely traditional watercolor illustrations Hiruni Kariyawasam that perfectly capture the vibrant atmosphere of the coffee shop. It encourages young readers to love people who don't love the same things they do. Children will have fun reading this book while searching for all the pink latte-art hearts scattered throughout the pages. There is also a surprise/reward at the end of the book. Tammy Gerhard helps parents teach their children to embrace differences and have a strong sense of community. This is a perfect rhyming read-aloud picture book, especially for kids who love going to the coffee shop for hot cocoa or other sweet treats.
