Closure by Lindsey Todd starts with Morgan Wells singing to charm the audience. She is attracted to fellow musician Kyle in a manner that enables her to overcome her obsession with her former boyfriend, Wade. As part of the healing process, Morgan recounts the history of the relationship, beginning with a crush on her friend’s blind date, and enduring years of being friend-zoned until she finally became Wade’s girlfriend. They date through college although, as their physical relationship progresses, Morgan is uncomfortable being intimate before marriage. Wade becomes less religious, while Morgan renews her devotion to Catholicism. Finally, she acknowledges the need to break the relationship off, but how does Wade feel?
Closure by Lindsey Todd is a deeply reflective tale of first love, change, and growing apart that incorporates young adult and new adult themes. The lead character, Morgan, openly shares her feelings and shows emotional vulnerability. Alerted from the beginning that this would not be a forever relationship, I found it easy to note things that were unhealthy. I noticed a catalog of sins, commencing with envy when she lusted after another girl’s partner, dishonesty as she pretended to accept a platonic friendship to remain in Wade’s direct messages, and idolatry as she compromised her religious principles to please him. I felt privileged to share Morgan’s soul searching. The power imbalance between Morgan and Wade evoked my sympathy, so I longed for her to develop greater awareness and self-worth. I recommend Closure by Lindsey Todd for readers of contemporary romance and women’s literature.
