Cleo's Tomato Sandwich is an educational concept book for children in grades 4-6, written and designed by Dr. Julia E. Antoine. Cleo has always loved eating tomato sandwiches. She needs no meat or cheese to compete with those slices of ripe, red tomatoes. Cleo had her first tomato sandwich one afternoon when she was truly hungry and couldn't wait for dinner. Her mom had neither meat nor cheese and had suggested bread and butter as a snack, but Cleo wouldn't hear of it. Finally, her mom looked at the tomato that she was about to cut up as she was preparing dinner, and she created Cleo's first tomato sandwich. From that day on, tomato sandwiches were an essential part of every day for Cleo. She loved going to the farmers' market with her mom to help her pick out the biggest, reddest, and sweetest tomatoes. Her favorites were by far the Heirloom tomatoes. One day, Cleo came up with a plan. She would learn how to grow her own tomatoes. It would take some research, dedication and work, but it would be so nice to be able to make tomato sandwiches with tomatoes fresh from her garden.
Dr. Julia E. Antoine's educational concept book for children in grades 4-6, Cleo's Tomato Sandwich, is entertaining and informative. Cleo's mom came up with a pretty good idea for a sandwich, and readers may be inspired to experiment with their own vegetable sandwiches instead of the more common meat and cheese versions. I found myself thinking about buying a few Heirloom tomatoes and preparing the seeds for planting using Cleo's method as I read the story. Cleo's use of the library and the internet to research an idea that she has gives readers a pretty good methodology to put into practice for themselves, with parental approval of course, which is set out several times in the text. Antoine's story line is compelling, easy to understand and fun, and her characters work brilliantly. Cleo's Tomato Sandwich is highly recommended.
