Clay Hats by Wilfredo Gonzalez takes place in Rochester, New York, over about a three-year period. Clay was a man who loved his neighborhood, just as his grandfather did before him. Clay showed this love by mowing yards, shoveling snow, and praying for every member of the family while he did the jobs. Clay was known for wearing an old, beat-up, light blue hat. Then Clay was murdered, and the neighborhood came together to help the widow and her family and to create a memorial to Clay. Every year they continued to hold a celebration. Many of these people had been neighbors but had not known each other before Clay's death. The person who had killed Clay was connected to the neighborhood. The family of the murderer and Clay's family joined together to further Clay's legacy.
My favorite part of Clay Hats by Wilfredo Gonzalez was watching people change as they were able to become better people and learn to forgive. I appreciated how people who had not known how to trust God learned this lesson as they mingled with their new friends. I loved that Brian, one of the men who was touched and changed, reunited with his brother because of this experience. It was exciting when Brian and the son of the murderer were rescued by God from certain death. I liked the mystery running through the book. I feel that though this is a Christian-themed book, other readers would enjoy it.
