Claude: A Dog of the Sixties by Katherine L. Holmes is a delightful story for all dog lovers. Perry is a good student but his life changes when Claude, the poodle, comes to live with them. Claude is bow-legged and this prevents him from being an actual show dog. But Perry and his sister Ginger find it difficult to train him. He also tries to escape from the house. On the other side, Perry has been chosen with three other students for an enrichment programme. The story is entertaining and has many levels to it which will keep children glued to the pages.
The story is not only about Claude, but also about Perry, and the author weaves these threads seamlessly, making the plot engaging and exciting as it progresses. Claude being trained by the family, and his pranks and growing stages are a delight to read. All dog lovers will love Claude who is adorable and lovable. The plot is palpable and the author's fluidity when it comes to expression gives the story a good pace and flow. Claude's escapades along with Perry's search for aliens make the plot refreshingly original.
The author strikes a good balance when it comes to narrating Perry's story and Claude's routine. The plot is simple and linked to the Sixties, yet will keep readers interested with its many dimensions. Whether it is Perry's alien hunts or Claude's daily escapades or Perry's father's history classes, the story has something to offer to every reader.
