CJ's New Basketball by Ivy Valentine Pate is a cute, educational story. On Sunday, CJ’s father surprises CJ with his first basketball. He promises to take CJ to a real basketball court on Saturday so they could play. CJ is so excited that he tries to practice with it all week in the house. CJ ends up getting into a lot of messes before Saturday.
I read CJ's New Basketball with my 4-year-old tomboy daughter. The first thing she noticed about this book is that there is a bunny in every picture of the book. The bunny holds up signs telling readers which day of the week it is. I loved this and think it is a great way to teach the days of the week to kids. The other thing my daughter noticed was how CJ kept accidentally hitting everything in the house with his basketball. She thought this was funny and was able to relate to it because she does the exact same thing.
Ivy Valentine Pate has done a good job with this book. I liked how no matter what CJ messed up, his mother never got overly mad. She even helped him clean up. The illustrations by Chris Padovano were nicely done. Each picture is full of color. I also liked it that each day CJ wore different clothes. This book not only teaches the days of the week, but it also teaches basketball terminology. Overall, I thought this is a cute book. My daughter enjoyed it, which always makes me happy. I volunteer in a grammar school library and I see the types of books the kids choose. This book would be a slam dunk with young readers.
