Christening Leena Too by K.E. Kennell is a story about life-long friendship, a friendship that defies boundaries, distance and adversities. At Woodhull Naval Academy, an enduring friendship is forged between the shy Maximillion Daugherty or better still, Captain Mac, and his outgoing friend, Cadet Roberto Garci, better known as Bob. With the Vietnam war in full swing, Bob goes to fight in the war, leaving Captain Mac behind. They later reunite and Bob moves to live in Scuppernong Cove, Florida, close to Mac. Their lives become intertwined, with each of them always there for the other. Parallel to the account of their friendship, the plot also chronicles the building of a yacht christened Leena Too. This book is the first of the four-book series, Scuttlebutt from Scuppernong Cove.
Told in a calm yet suspenseful manner, Christening Leena Too by K.E. Kennell is a great account punctuated by many humorous and sometimes sobering moments. The backdrop of the story, the hidden town of Scuppernong Cove, adds to the beauty of the plot and introduces many magical instances throughout. The relationship between the characters is admirable as each plays an important role in the theme of friendship within the book. The stubborn and sometimes humorous nature of Bob and the supportive character of his friend, Captain Mac, were a great foundation for the account. Overall, I would recommend Christening Leena Too to all lovers of literary fiction. It was emotive, funny in some places, and the themes contained within will warm any heart.
