Child Decoded (Unlocking Complex Issues in Your Child's Learning, Behavior or Attention) by Marijke Jones, Kim Gangwish, and Robin E. McEvoy is a non-fiction parenting book that would appeal most to an audience of parents, teachers, counselors, and other child care professionals. This book serves as a manual for those persons dealing with children with behavioral and learning problems by providing a resource with the information needed to understand the different problems that might be affecting a child. In addition to providing facts about what the issues or problems might be affecting a child, it also offers information about how to get the child the help that he or she needs.
Child Decoded by Marijke Jones, Kim Gangwish, and Robin E. McEvoy is organized into five main sections: getting started, disorders and challenges, digging deeper, broader solutions, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), and moving forward. I found this method of organization to be a good choice for this book because it made it easier for me to find the information that I was looking for. The authors wrote using a style and vocabulary that do not require the reader to have medical knowledge in order to understand the contents of the book.
As an after school counselor for special needs children, I found this book to be an amazing resource! I found ideas and techniques that I plan to utilize with the children in my group in order to help them to learn and understand their academic material. While I am not a parent, I still found this book to be extremely eye opening as I did not know it was possible for a child to have different problems that were intertwined together. This book has inspired me to do more research into the different issues my kids might have so that I can offer better assistance to them.
