"Chef ReCee Jay & Friends" is a charming tale of a young girl and her friend Carb, the monkey, as they plan a day of sugar-filled fun. From cupcakes to cookies to lemonade tea, the two fill their basket with tempting snacks. As ReCee and Carb prepare to embark on their sweet adventure, they are met by Veggie the rabbit. Veggie was shocked by what she saw - treats and snacks galore. As a good friend would, Veggie encouraged ReCee and Carb to substitute healthy snacks for some of their sugary snacks. She offered great alternatives to sweeteners and presented vegetables and fruit in a way that no one could resist.
I absolutely loved this children's book! C.J. Williams presents health and nutrition in a way that is fresh and innovative. The illustrations are perfect and sure to catch the eyes of a child. The characters are cute and fun. Her topic is both timely and relevant, given the concerns with obesity in our country. "Chef ReCee Jay & Friends" skillfully sends the message to children about the benefits of eating in a healthy style. The author offers a variety of healthy foods which would most likely appeal to young children. This is a great way to introduce healthy living to young readers. The story is written in verse form; however, certain sections do lose the rhythm of the verse. Readers will fall in love with ReCee, Carb and Veggie. I recommend this book to parents and educators as a teaching tool.
