Thirteen-year-old Chase Tinker takes readers on an exciting adventure and a magical ride in Chase Tinker and the House of Magic: Book 1 by Malia Ann Haberman. Chase Tinker has the power to move things with his mind and his younger brother, Andy, has a weird ability too. Chase has been caught for shoplifting, causing worry to his mother. Her husband, Benjamin, has been missing for over a year now. Their grandfather, who lives on a remote island with their cousin Janie, wants Chase and Andy to visit him to learn more about their magical and supernatural powers. They find out that their grandfather lives in a old house where there is magic everywhere. Chase discovers that the magic is controlled by an old relic in the attic. Will Chase be able to unravel the magic at Tinker House and also find out about his father’s whereabouts?
The story is fast paced and the characters - Chase, Andy, Janie, and Persephone - are all real and relatable and kids would love to have the kind of adventure they read about. It’s an entertaining book and the author’s descriptions are detailed and vivid, helping readers to connect well with the characters and the scenes. The Tinker House will fascinate everyone with its magic, and it is interesting to see how Chase and Andy develop their magical powers. The twist at the end is unexpected, taking readers by surprise. With young heroes, whimsy, evil, and mystery, this book will make readers look forward eagerly to its sequel.
