Celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival by Eugenia Chu and Y.Y. Chan is a collection of stories, history, folklore, traditions, and recipes of Chinese culture. It targets kids aged 6-9, but I believe many older readers will find this book just as interesting and informative. The book is filled with colorful pictures that fit well with the writing. The stories are charming, and the engaging writing will keep the reader turning the pages. If that weren’t enough, the book provides directions on how to make Chinese lanterns, and play a Chinese dice game, and has a detailed glossary to help young ones with words that might be challenging.
Eugenia Chu has published other works that also talk about the fascinating culture of China. One of the most important things I appreciate about her writing is that it is all about the fascinating culture, fun facts, and interesting history. Politics has no place in her books, which is how it should be. She builds strong bridges to help people learn about each other in a safe yet exciting way. Her skilled writings open a reader’s mind to incredible places and people with an excitement that is simply infectious. Celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival by Eugenia Chu and Y.Y. Chan works to help those with Chinese ancestry learn more about their wonderful heritage while helping the rest of us appreciate the unique country of China. I wish there were more books like this about other cultures, created with the same intensity, color, and all-around fun.
