Cats Are Lucky! is a children's book written by Julia Todd Stone and illustrated by Nayan Soni. The narrator of the book is a border collie who sometimes wonders if being a cat is better than being a dog. The collie lists all of the ways cats are lucky. Cats can sneak up and bully dogs. They can fit into small places and things, like the mailbox, a large cup and even a glass. Cats can even be spooky and look like Dracula, or lie around in silly positions. And...they can even sleep on their owners' heads. The border collie sees all these cool things that cats can do, but she realizes that she's really special just as she is, and she's happy being a dog.
Julia Todd Stone's children's animal book, Cats Are Lucky!, is funny and heartwarming, and Nayan Soni's illustrations are inspired. Each page was a delight and brought a smile to my face. The illustrations are brightly colored and cheerful, and the expressions on the cats and dogs' faces are priceless, especially that of the Chihuahua who just knows there's a grumpy-faced cat sneaking up on him, and the Dracula cat. This would be a great book for a beginning reader who also happens to love animals. The words follow closely with the illustrations, which can make the reading experience a lot simpler and more satisfying, even for a child who doesn't really enjoy reading. Cats Are Lucky! also lets kids know that they're great just as they are, even if they sometimes wish they were like someone else -- which is a very good message, indeed. I enjoyed Cats Are Lucky! It was funny and smart all at once, and it's highly recommended.
