Quentin Archer's life is complicated enough. The death of his wife and a case gone wrong that involves his immediate family have driven him out of his Detroit home to New Orleans. He hopes the transition will be simple, but soon learns that the culture of New Orleans is different from anything he imagined as he gets assigned to the case of the murder of a prominent juvenile judge. The case seems like a simple vengeance killing, until a mysterious voodoo queen approaches him with a story that lines up with too many clues pointing to a bigger game happening in the criminal justice system. Worst yet, the clues point to the leader of the most powerful Krewe as being behind things, and Quentin's own colleagues are pressuring him to back off this lead from fear for their lives. Unfortunately, Quentin has nothing to lose and has only one goal in mind: to serve justice. Casting Bones - A Mystery Series Set in New Orleans (A Quentin Archer Mystery) by Don Bruns is an exciting tale of money, power, and the abuses done in the name of both.
I loved this book. In fact, I found it hard to put down. Quentin is an intriguing character, and he keeps crossing paths with the most unlikely of allies. Furthermore, the "story behind the story" is a subplot that's as intriguing as the main plot of judges being murdered. Don Bruns does a great job of crafting a story that draws you in and won't let go, even after you read the last page. It's a thrilling adventure and leaves you wondering how it reflects on the world around you - and even opens that world up to some beliefs and practices that are unfamiliar to most of us, but all too real in New Orleans. I especially like Bruns's handling of voodoo and dealing with it respectfully. Casting Bones is a great mystery read that will leave you wanting more.
