Carpe Noctem is a work of fiction in the paranormal, action, and mystery subgenres. It is best suited to adult readers owing to the presence of explicit scenes of violence, sexual situations, and strong language throughout, and was penned by author Samael Ocenar. In this exciting thriller with plenty of supernatural twists and turns, we meet young vampire Li Xinghua when her world is turned upside down by a sudden revelation. She has no choice but to team up with Detective David Ransom for answers, but his other investigations point the finger of blame at one of her own roommates for a grisly murder.
Author Samael Ocenar has crafted a gory and gothic mystery tale that takes the traditionally dark world of vampires and gives it a modern, criminal edge. One of the features of the novel that I enjoyed the most was the development of our central figure Li Xinghua. I was fascinated by the way that she had so many relatable human characteristics but then a lot of vampiric behaviors, and these two elements were balanced really well. The plot of the novel itself was well constructed to move at a speedy pace, dropping new clues for the mystery at every turn and making it really difficult to put the book down as you always wanted to see what would happen next. Overall, Carpe Noctem delivers everything it promises for a dark and gritty crime drama and I’d certainly recommend it to readers seeking excitement, but also highly relatable fantasy characters in their next supernatural read.
