Captain Sillyvoice and the Sea Monster by Ruth Whenham is a delightful storybook for children that revolves around a nautical theme. Captain Sillyvoice and his crew have a new way of being pirates. They are not bold, tough or fierce. Captain Sillyvoice speaks with a fine singing technique and he and his crew form a popular sea shanty band. They sail everywhere, taking their show on a world-wide tour. It's on one of these trips that they run into Captain Fiercy-Fidget. He is feared by all and he warns them of a dangerous sea monster. Captain Sillyvoice and his crew want to sail past this fearsome beast. Will they be able to do it and reach their destination without being devoured by the sea monster?
The author blends songs, adventure, activity and humor into the story, making it appealing to young readers. The illustrations are lively and catchy, and they give a good pace and movement to the scenes and also breathe life into the characters. It's a good bedtime storybook and can also be used for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries. The fun and mirth in the story are palpable to readers and they can connect well with the adventure and silliness. All the characters are well portrayed and readers are also introduced to new sea creatures in many scenes. The songs are silly and the book is interactive. It pulls readers into the story. The book has everything - story, song, adventure, humor, silliness and much more to make it a charming read.
