Can I Play by Dianne Miller is a children’s short story about a Little Bunny that does not want to include and accept other Little Bunnies while he is playing in the sandbox. All of the other Little Bunnies were different and given a task to help with building the sandcastle. Daddy Bunny did a wonderful job of reminding Little Bunny how he was small once and how he had wanted to be accepted by others at some point. Eventually, Little Bunny was able to give jobs to his new friends like finding more sticks, helping make a road, digging a moat, and finding leaves.
The message in this short story is simple and offers the opportunity for children to relate to the main character of Little Bunny because of the cute pictures. Young children will also appreciate the different traits of the other bunnies that come along and help with the sandcastle. Little Bunny’s Daddy plays a vital role in helping Little Bunny understand that in life he will encounter all kinds of different bunnies, and he will have to include others when working. The most important part of this story is that in life you don’t have to be best friends but you do have to work with others and get things done. This is the perfect children’s short story because it teaches a big lesson at the end in a simple way for young children to understand.
