Campanelli: Siege of the Nighthunter by Frederick H. Crook is a dystopian murder mystery set in 2110. It’s June and a serial killer is on the hunt in Chicago City. The first victim has been mutilated almost beyond recognition, partially eaten, and he was also wanted by the Sentinel division headed up by Frank Campanelli. In a short time, the bodies pile up and the only clue they have is DNA evidence that points to someone who is military. So why can’t they identify him? Because his DNA has been encoded to stop identification. Marcus Williams, Campanelli’s partner, seems to know more than he is letting on until the FBI is called in to help track down the killer, dubbed “The Nighthunter.” A killer who leaves a city in terror, a killer who is efficient and effective. A killer who must be caught.
Campanelli: Siege of the Nighthunter by Frederick H. Crook is set in the future and sees the detective having to face a super-soldier. This is an incredibly fast paced novel and is packed with suspense. It’s a real page-turner that keeps you hanging on right to the very end and is chock full of action – no dead bits here! This is a bit of a mix between future sci-fi and good, old-fashioned murder mystery and I have to say the combination works very well. The plot is masterful, very well thought out, and develops naturally as the story is told. Character development leaves the reader in no doubt as to who the main characters are and what they are all about. It is very clear that a great deal of work has gone into this story and the author has created something of which he can be extremely proud. I thoroughly enjoyed the novel, and will definitely be looking for more from Mr. Crook.
