Timothy R. Baldwin’s Camp Lenape is a mesmerizing mystery. Written for a young adult audience, this novel will also appeal to an older crowd. Alissa and Janice are excited that they will get a chance to be a junior counselor at their favorite camp, Camp Lenape. Marcus and Nate came back to be junior counselors. These teens also dream of taking their friendship to the next level. Maybe Marcus will get brave enough to ask Alissa to the yearly dance. A camper goes missing, giving Nate the opportunity to implement the detective skills he has been waiting to use for years. These four junior counselors suspect there is more to the stories they have been told by the camp owners. It is up to Marcus, Alissa, Nate, and Janice to find the missing camper before something terrible happens.
Camp Lenape had me captivated from the beginning. Timothy R. Baldwin gradually amplifies the mystery that surrounds this camp. The author takes you back to your own days of camp, then twists the plot to something much more alarming. The danger the teenagers face intensifies as the novel becomes more gripping. The pace quickens as the danger increases and the teens find more clues. Each of the four teenagers adds a different talent or character trait needed to help find this camper. The danger that confronts Alissa makes this a story for a more mature young person. Mild violence towards the end takes this novel to the level of a crime mystery thriller. Overall, this book will take you on an adventure you never expected. The author surprised me with the strength of his characters and the responsibility they took on themselves. I hope to read more from this author as you can feel the energy he injects within his work.
